    Significance Statement
"Significant as a Chinese benevolent association in Los Angeles' Chinatown. The national Hop Sing Tong Society was established in 1875 in San Francisco; a Los Angeles chapter was in operation by the 1890s. Chinese benevolent associations are charitable organizations established to provide for the needs of Chinese immigrants, such as social welfare and cultural activities, in order to preserve the culture and traditions of Chinese people. Benevolent associations were often organized around villages or surnames, serving immigrants who shared a common dialect or place of origin. The Hop Sing Tong Benevolent Association continues to operate at this location."
